Atacama Dessert

With only about 7% of Bolivia’s roads being paved, my rough and dusty exploration into surreal landscapes like the Salar de Uyuni and Dali desert in the south west, would reveal to me a barren, volcanic planetary world.  Red, green and blue coloured lagoons, pink flamingos , geysers, volcanoes, geothermal wonders, striking painted mountains and bizarre rock formations, gave the distinctive feeling of being on the moon.
I have been privileged to witness so many inspiring sights in Bolivia. While traveling in this very poor and developing country can be challenging, efforts are rewarded with some of the most visually pleasing scenery in the entire world, bathed in the most wonderful morning and evening light. Shooting times are limited to around 20 minuets as the quality light is fleeting, but what stunning light it is!
For all this, there is a price to pay. The high altitudes of the Altiplano and salt flats at around 4500 mts, humble you into understanding the limits of your body. Dizzy spells, an ever present dull thumping headache, running out of breath at the slightest form of exertion, cracked lips and dry skin from the zero humidity, after time, do take a toll on the body and mind. The return to lower elevations a welcome relief, but given the chance I would gladly return.
Poverty and corruption are visible everywhere and make no mistake, Bolivia is not the world’s easiest travel destination, but it will certainly make you think — and if you give it a chance, it just might profoundly impact and change the view of your world….for the better?
